Stockholm Workshop on Volunteering- 2009

Volunteering or Voluntourism is an increasing market for young people who wish to gain first hand experience in developing regions of the world. Many agencies are co-ordinating and co-operating with local projects NGOs and organizations in order to find adequate placement for volunteers. With the growth of the Volunteering market it is becoming increasingly relevant to engage agencies in a positive dialogue on the impact of Volunteers and find constructive ways to develop viable CSR Criteria.

CSR and Sustainability has increasingly become crosscutting. In relation to Volunteering/Voluntourism the issue becomes central as the sector does have a real impact on the local communities where volunteers are placed. In light of the above, a collection of good practices enshrined in a declaration of principles or a guiding document is most relevant for conducting Voluntourism in a responsible way.

In 2009 SDGI will host the Stockholm Workshop on Volunteering. The purpose of the workshop is to provide a forum where Volunteer/Voluntourism agencies, aid workers, organizations and other relevant actors involved in sustainable development can engage in a constructive dialogue for the advancement of sustainable practices in relation to tourism and local development in line with the goals as stated by the Millennium Declaration of the United Nations.

SDGI is a member of the International Effective Practices Workgrop on Volunteering. The findings and outcome of the Stockholm Workshop on Volunteering are intended to be integrated and contribute to the workgroup.

The one day workshop will also feature a screening of 'Changing the World on Vacation' (click on the link to see the trailer) a new documentary by Daniela Kon/ Deeda Productions which raises important issues regarding development, aid and volunteering.
