Mainstreaming the Millennium Development GoalsIn 2000 the United Nations hosted the largest gathering of world leaders in an attempt to address the acute need for global action against poverty and combating environmental decline. The Millennium Summit, which convened in New York, became a blueprint for our common responsibility to ‘aid in meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability for future generations to meet their own needs’.
SDGI brings the MDGs to local initiatives and places their ideas and work in a global context. Mainstreaming the MDGs not only assists local civil society organizations to formulate their initiatives but facilitates significantly transfer of local knowledge to international organizations as well as enhances local capacity to participate in formulating development policies.
